2020 – ongoing

Collaboration with Jonas Dengler

The oceans are overfished and yet we are eating more and more fish and seafood. How can we eat fish with a good conscience in the future without emptying the seas and polluting the environment? Aquaculture, fish farming instead of wild catching, could be an answer if it is operated in an environmentally friendly way. Our project “Fishtank” is looking for solutions for the fisheries of the future between profitability and sustainability.

TRADITIONAL AQUACULTURE

The Aschauteiche fish farm is a pond farm founded in 1906 at Heidebach Aschau in Eschede, Lower Saxony. The family business breeds carp, tench, pike and golden orfe extensively and traditionally. Nature-integrated fish farming is characterized by the fact that it is part of an entire ecosystem. Pond farming is the most original form of aquaculture.

TROUT IN TRANSITION

In addition to overfishing, climate change and the associated rise in temperature are also threatening wild populations. Aquatic organisms are severely affected by this, as rising water temperatures have an impact on their development.

MODERN AQUACULTURE

At "Swissshrimp", a company based in Rheinfelden near Basel, the Pacific white shrimp are bred in a closed saltwater recirculation system. The company is one of the most advanced aquaculture operations in Europe, particularly due to the use of waste heat from a neighboring saline.
